Slovenia has launched an integrated information system with an Internet-based partner search tool enabling users to find partners in Slovenia for research projects.

This is in fact the third edition of ‘Slovenia, your cooperation partner’, and took two years to develop, as Dr Ales Gnamus explained to CORDIS News. The ‘targeted active partner search’ is one of four sections on the system, the others being ‘discover Slovenia’, ‘policy/institutional framework’ and ‘integrated services and multimedia’.

‘No other country has anything like it,’ Dr Gnamus told CORDIS News proudly.

The companies listed in the database have been screened before their details have been included. They must have references and to have initiated research in the past. In addition to companies, information on individual researchers can be found, right down to their CV and bibliography.

Included is a list of Slovenian patents, as well as official information on financial credibility, provided by the National Payment Authority.

Slovenia was one of the must successful countries in the EU’s Fifth and Sixth Framework Programmes (FP5 and FP6), says Dr Gnamus, and this partner search was responsible for many of the partnerships formed, he says. The country got back more than three times what it invested in FP5.

In spite of this success, the system was thought necessary because, as Dr Gnamus explained, ‘Slovenia is a small country, it’s relatively new, and people don’t know much about it.’ Also, Slovenia realises that there are many things that it cannot do on its own, and that competitiveness therefore depends upon international cooperation.
