A conference entitled 'A topological approach to cultural dynamics’ will be held from 10 to 12 December in Barcelona, Spain. It is sponsored by the ATACD (’A topological approach to cultural dynamics’) network, which is funded under the 'New and emerging science and technology’ (NEST) priority of the Sixth Framework Programme (FP6).

Topology is a mathematical discipline which can help in the understanding of different kinds of social and cultural changes. Topological and intensive approaches provide a set of tools and concepts to think about levels and types of change – learning, transmission, innovation, adaptation, self-organisation and evolution.

The conference looks into the potential of topological and other intensive approaches to culture and space for thinking about change. It also covers how and why the question of change is being posed in relation to culture.

There will be a cultural policy event for industry and policy makers, with a focus on social and cultural trends, different ways of thinking about predictability and the management of cultural change, especially in relation to processes of innovation.

The conference will be preceded by a student day on 9 December.
